Salt Lake City Roof Repair Midwinter Checklist, Part 1

February 7, 2024

Before winter, we check to ensure our roofs are ready for the weather. After winter, we inspect our roofs for any problems caused by the ice and snow. But what about during winter? At Patriot Roofing, we know that an important part of roof repair in Salt Lake City is checking on the condition of your roof throughout the winter. Performing midwinter checks and repairs on your roof is crucial to ensure that it remains in good condition and can withstand the continued harsh winter weather.

Check out the first half of our roof repair midwinter checklist to ensure your Salt Lake City home stays protected throughout the season.

Inspect for Leaks

Check your attic and ceilings for any signs of water leaks or stains. Even small leaks can lead to significant damage over time. As snow and ice accumulate on your roof, water can seep into the roofing materials as the ice and snow melt. Checking for leaks periodically helps to prevent serious roof damage.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Your gutters can get clogged even in the winter. Clear debris, leaves, and other obstructions from gutters and downspouts. Keeping gutters clear helps prevent ice dams and ensures proper drainage.

Check Flashing

Leaks tend to form where sections of your roof come together, or objects like skylights or vents interrupt the surface. Examine the flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights for gaps. Make sure the flashing is secure and in good condition to prevent water penetration.

Trim Overhanging Branches

Trim any tree branches that overhang your roof. Heavy snow and ice can cause these branches to break and damage your roof. It’s much easier to trim a tree branch than to remove it from your roof after it’s fallen.

Inspect Shingles

If you can still see them, look for damaged, loose, or missing shingles. Replace or repair any compromised shingles to maintain the integrity of your roof. If replacing shingles isn’t possible due to the weather, keep an eye on the area and get yourself on your roofing contractor’s schedule for the spring.

Check Attic Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation keeps your attic and roof at the correct temperature to prevent condensation and ice dam formation. Make sure vents are clear and unblocked so air can continue to circulate.
